Kava Kava root for anxiety

For ultimate relaxation it’s hard to beat Kava. Kava Kava (piper methysticum) is the name of the drink that is extracted from the roots of the piper methysticum plant. It has been used as a ceremonial and social drink in the Pacific Islands for centuries. Many people say they get an awesome relaxed feeling after consuming kava, without feeling muddle headed or intoxicated (there are claims that you can become intoxicated if you consume a very large amount of kava).

Kava’s popularity has been on the rise since the 1990’s, even though there is a lot of controversy about this root. It’s funny how the controversy started when people in the west started taking it. After all, it had been used, as I mentioned above, for centuries in the Pacific Islands without any apparent liver damage.

Is Kava safe to use for relaxing

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s there were a number of people that supposedly developed severe liver problems after taking Kava. Scientists actually went to the South Pacific to study Kava and find out how it damages the liver. They found nothing conclusive. Theories abound however. Maybe the supplements were made from Kava that had mold on it, maybe they were made from the whole plant and not just the root, which made the supplements toxic. Perhaps the people that became ill already had a problem, so large quantities of Kava exacerbated the problem. Basically, no one really knows what happened.

It’s probably safe but..

Some more recent studies on rats say that no change in the liver was detected at all. Personally, I will err on the side of caution and not take it everyday. I do take Kava sometimes and I have to admit that I feel like my panic formula works better when I add it in. It’s exactly as some people describe it- it’s like the worries are just taken off my shoulders and this calmness comes over me. Ultimate relaxation!

However, if I were someone with liver problems, I would just not take it at all. There are other excellent, safe herbs you can take that will do just as good a job as Kava. Also stop taking it if unusual fatigue, abdominal pain, appetite loss, dark urine, pale stools, yellow eyes or skin occurs.

Since I can’t just go into my backyard and dig up fresh Kava root so I’m sure of what I’m getting, I purchase the Herb Pharm and Hawaii Pharm brands as they are both brands I trust. Gaia has liquid filled capsules that are good if you can’t or won’t drink a tincture.

My dosage: 2 dropperfuls – A dropperful is whatever amount comes up into the dropper when you squeeze the top. This is less than what I took for panic attacks. I take this amount when I am having an especially bad anxiety day. I do not take kava on a daily basis.

Even with all the debate about Kava Kava’s safety, the one thing everyone agree’s on is that it definitely helps with anxiety.
