The name Motherwort (leonurus cardiaca) is a combination of the words mother and wort, which is what people back in the day called an herb. So, according to that definition, Motherwort is an herb for mothers. But it’s so much more than that. Melancholy, what we now call depression, anxiety, and anxiety side effects, can all be helped with Motherwort.
Great for women
As the name implies, Motherwort is an herb that is great for women and women’s issues. It’s good for irregular periods, PMS and can even induce contractions (which is why pregnant women shouldn’t take Motherwort). However, like so many other herbs, Motherwort is a multi-tasker.
Be still my beating heart
Motherwort helps the emotional heart, but it also helps the physical heart too. Irregular heartbeats, also known as arrhythmia, are very common, can happen to anyone, and are usually a temporary occurrence (if yours are frequent or accompanied by other symptoms see your doctor please). A racing heart is one of the most common symptoms of anxiety. It can create a vicious circle because feeling your heart race can cause anxiety, which then causes your heart to race, which then causes anxiety – you get the idea. This is especially true for someone suffering from Illness Anxiety. Motherwort is excellent for strengthening the heart and regulating heartbeats. This is why many herbal heart tonics contain Motherwort.
I know how it feels
When I was having my panic attacks, a very fast irregular heartbeat was my main symptom. A racing heart is an extremely scary feeling. Even though I knew it was anxiety I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something wrong with my heart. This is why I ended up in the ER hooked up to heart monitors. The doctors told me my heart was perfectly fine and sent me home.

What I use
I didn’t have any Motherwort on hand when I was having my panic attacks, but if I did, I definitely would have added it to my panic attack formula. I use it in a heart formula I make for my husband, and I was out of Motherwort at the time. Herb Pharm organic Motherwort tincture is the one I prefer, and yes it is a little bitter, but honestly what herbal tincture isn’t bitter? They also make a good Heart Health formula that contains Motherwort and other herbs that are good for the heart.
If you prefer a tincture without alcohol Hawaii Pharm has an alcohol free one. If you don’t want a tincture there are also capsules available though I would double the recommended dosage on the bottle. I could not find an already made bagged Motherwort tea. You can get the dried herb and make tea from that if you want. I have purchased dried herbs from Starwest Botanicals many times, and they have high-quality organic herbs and other herbal products. They also have their products on Amazon if you prefer to buy from there.
In the words of Nicholas Culpeper an herbalist from the 17th century “There is no better herb to take melancholy vapours from the heart, to strengthen it, and make a merry, cheerful, blithe soul than this herb”.
